Huge queues built up outside a train station in Worcester following a number of cancellations.

Dozens of people were seen queuing outside Foregate Street Station on Saturday night with train cancellations and Christmas Fayre crowds creating 'chaos'.

Sharon Jones, who was on her way to visit a sick family member in Droitwich after work, was caught up in the crowds at around 7pm.

She said: "I’ve never seen anything like it not even on football match days.

"Three or four trains cancelled but due to the Victorian Fayre and Christmas shoppers the queue was inside the station and going right back to the crossings at The Butts.

"It’s chaos people are standing with children long up the road."

She added: "There was stewards and stewardess doing their best. The crowd was respectful."

A spokesman of West Midlands Railway has now confirmed a queuing system was put in place due to the number of people attending the Victorian Fayre.

They said: “A queuing system was implemented at Worcester Foregate Street on Saturday evening for the safety of passengers due to large numbers of people attending the Victorian Fayre.

“Queuing systems allow the number of passengers on platforms at one time to be managed safety and are routinely used for large-scale events such as sporting fixtures or Christmas markets.”
