A new campaign has launched in Worcestershire encouraging children to read more.

Worcestershire County Council’s Winter Mini Challenge 2021 encourages children to become ‘Wild World Heroes’ by completing the challenge.

Children are encouraged to go on an arctic adventure, by reading at least three books over the winter period, to find out more about arctic creatures and environmental issues.

Once children have read their books, they are able to upload the details of what they have read to their online profile and write a short review.

After reading three books, children will receive a limited-edition virtual badge and a special Winter Mini Challenge certificate to print off and keep.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Matt Dormer, said, “Reading challenges have been immensely popular over the years with our young readers across the county, and the Winter Mini Challenge is another opportunity to become a bookworm.

“It’s a perfect way to make your way through those books you’ve been wanting to read this winter and I would encourage our younger readers to get involved and help to put Worcestershire on the reading challenge map.

“We know that children’s reading levels can drop off over the school holidays and visiting the library, joining the Winter Mini Challenge, reading with your child and encouraging them to get excited about reading is really important and this challenge is a really fun way to keep reading fun over the festive season and into the new year.”

The challenge will be running until January 15, and children will be able to visit their local library to find their favourite three books to read during the festive period.
