A NIGHTCLUB boss warned security staff will most likely bear the brunt of people's upset as covid passports are brought in.

The government announced people will need the NHS Covid Pass on the NHS app will be mandatory for entry into clubs and large gatherings from Wednesday, December 15.

For those without the app, proof of a negative lateral flow test through a text message or email from the NHS would be sufficient.

Alexander Fell, owner of Alexander's in New Street, has said they are happy to follow the government rules to keep customers safe.

"It's obviously going to have some effect because there's quite a large proportion of the population who aren't vaccinated.

"As a hospitality venue we are happy to go along with the government guidelines as the safety of our customers is paramount."

It is one of the busiest times of the year for hospitality businesses with Christmas parties and New Year's celebrations.

Venues have been warned if they fail to comply with the regulations they could face fines of up to £10,000.

Mr Fell continued: "It probably will be our team of security staff who bear the brunt of people's political views.

"It's our busiest time of year like it is for all the hospitality industry.

"We have been calling around all the pople who have bookings just to nudge them to look at the new regulations and make sure they have downloaded the app or take a lateral flow test.

"It has been a difficult year for the hospitality industry, we haven't been open for a year and were only open since the restrictions lifted.

"And the post-covid times are very different from the pre-covid.

"The worry is these restrictions might lead to further restrictions yet again."

Engand's new Plan B rules also include the wider wearing of face masks and a return to working from home for those who can to help stop the spread of the Omicron variant.

Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association, said the announcement came at the “worst possible time”.

He said: “Today’s announcement of Plan B by the Government is devastating news for the nightlife sector.

“The UK Government have twice ruled out Vaccine Passports before twice changing their mind. The mixed public health messages this week that have been coming out of the Government have arrived at the worst possible time – the pre-Christmas period is absolutely crucial for our sector.

"And now it is announced damaging Vaccine Passports are to be implemented."
