Plans for a new takeaway have been approved for Droitwich despite a number of objections from neighbours and local businesses.

Popular pizza franchise Papa John's will take over the former site of Barclays Bank in Victoria Square after planning officers gave the development the green light.

The plans will also see elevation works carried out on the building as part of a redesign to fit the impending takeaway's needs.

There are currently no appeals submitted against the application, however, six neighbours responded with criticisms of the proposal.

Complaints cited the large number of existing takeaways in the area and the possible economic damage to current businesses' trade.

In response to Wychavon District Council's planning committee, Marius Florian Rusu of The Leaning Tower of Pizza, said: "I have a pizza shop in Droitwich and we are currently having a hard time.

"Droitwich does not need another pizza shop or takeaway, this will affect all tradesmen - please consider this."

An additional comment from Annette Gul, a nearby neighbour, said: "I am objecting as we have far too many takeaways and fast food shops in Droitwich, we do not need another one.

"And what about parking? I honestly don't know why you keep allowing fast food shops in Droitwich it makes no sense."

Meanwhile, another neighbour said: "We have too many takeaways in one area, also there's a lot of noise at night from delivery cars and motorbikes.

"This attracts late night drunks who damage property, I highly object."

However, despite the local opposition, Wychavon District Council approved the plans on November 18 last year, with no objections from Droitwich Spa Town Council, Highways or Worcestershire Regulatory Services.

Furthermore, a heritage statement found "the reuse of this site for the proposed use would retain the unit in a maintained manner with active shopfront that contributes to the character and appearance of the area".

Full details of the plans can be found on Wychavon District Council's website using the application number 21/01847/FUL.
