Plans to demolish buildings once used to store tyres have been submitted by the University of Worcester.

If approved, the proposal would see the units, behind ETB Autocentres Tyres & MOT building in Hylton Road torn down.

The business will still continue to operate from the rest of the site as normal, with the plans only affecting units which used to be used by the car repairs firm for wholesale purposes.

This comes as part of the university's continued redevelopment of the former Hylton Road industrial estate into its new Severn Campus.

The first major development on the campus came almost a decade ago, with multi-purpose sports venue Worcester University Arena opening in May 2013.

The university is also currently developing a centre for Health and Medical Education in the building formerly occupied by Worcester News, which is due to open in early 2023.

Two further major planning applications are currently being considered by Worcester City Council, including proposals for an International Inclusive Cricket Education Centre.

The university is also awaiting a final decision on a proposal for 'significant' new infrastructure serving the Severn Campus.

Plans include non-vehicular access onto Henwick Road, including emergency vehicle access and flood egress, cycle routes and pedestrian paths, parking including electric vehicle and cycle parking, internal servicing and access roads linking to existing vehicle access from Hylton Road, green infrastructure, demolition of existing buildings, a new university store building, and further structures and associated works.

The Severn Campus is allocated for 'University related development' within the South Worcestershire Development Plan and the university has said it will ensure its 'contribution to the local economy continues', including the injection of jobs in hospitality and retail at the proposed cricket centre.

A spokesperson for the University of Worcester said: "The planned demolition of part of the current ETB building, owned by the university, forms part of the university's wider plans for its Severn Campus, which will see the creation of new facilities for health, wellbeing and inclusive sport.

"These new facilities will join the award-winning University of Worcester Arena and the adjoining Riverside building in creating an outstanding, exciting new centre bordering and connecting to the Riverside Park, which Worcester City Council is working to create.

"The university's refurbishment of the former Berrows House building is already well underway and will provide state-of-the-art teaching facility for health professional students studying nursing, midwifery, medicine, paramedicine, physiotherapy, sports therapy and occupational therapy as well as those studying to become Physician Associates.

"Other plans for the site include the world's first inclusive cricket education centre.

"For several years now, the University has been working with England Disability Cricket, the Worcestershire Cricket Board and County Cricket Club and the England Cricket Board on this project, which would provide both an important national facility and plentiful opportunities for children and the wider community in Worcester and the wider locality to gain educational, cricket and health skills.

"A planning application for infrastructure development is currently under consideration by the city council."
