A NINE-year-old litter picker has been recognised for collecting up to four bin liners of rubbish a week.

Charlotte Maloney was awarded the St John’s Councillors Good Young Citizens Medal by city councillor Richard Udall.

She was given the medal at an awards ceremony held earlier this month.

Charlotte litter picks throughout her neighbourhood of St John’s, to help the area be “a place to be proud of”.

She said: "I love seeing the area looking better than it was after a litter pick, better for us, wildlife and the environment.

“I hate seeing rubbish around and don’t understand why people do it. I want us to live in a place that is rubbish free and looks like a place to be proud of".

The ceremony was held at St John’s Library, where Charlotte’s family, friends and teachers from St Clements School, were present to see her accept the medal.

She was also given a £20 book voucher and a bottle of red grape juice alongside the medal.

Cllr Udall said: “Well done Charlotte, we are proud of the work you do.

“She collects up to four big bin liners of rubbish a week, all in the streets surrounding her home, she is a great example to others and especially the adults who are dropping the litter, she is simply amazing.

"She is a modern-day Womble, tidying up after what other folks leave behind, St John's is lucky to have young good citizens like Charlotte".

Charlotte posts updates for her litter picking work on a Facebook blog, which is helped run by her family.

“I grew up in Worcester and came back after 18 years in the army, I love St. John’s and want to help make it a better place for all".
