The University of Worcester has pledged to “exceed all safety requirements” in response to the government’s crackdown on terrorism at large venues.

The university has said it is among a handful of universities across the country with CCTV that meets the Home Office's stringent requirements.

It comes after home secretary, Priti Patel, announced that larger venues across the UK will have greater responsibilities when it comes to security to avoid a repeat of the Manchester Arena bombing.

According to a consultation document published last year, the duty could be applied to venues with a capacity of 100 or more people and organisations with 250 or more staff.

The University of Worcester often holds a variety of events throughout the academic year, with the University Arena regular holding live sporting events such as Vitality Netball Superleague games and a variety of basketball games.

A spokeswoman for the university said: “The University of Worcester takes the safety of visitors to its campuses very seriously and works hard to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for students to study, staff to work and guests to enjoy many live events.

“Our dedicated security team work 24/7, 365 days a year, in close partnership with our two campus Police Community Support Officers and have passed a rigorous assessment by West Mercia Constabulary to gain Community Safety Accreditation.

“The University of Worcester is one of a limited number of universities in the country to achieve accreditation, under the Police Reform Act 2002, as well as being one of only a handful of universities in the country whose CCTV has met the stringent requirements of the Home Office.

“All activity on the University’s campuses is regularly risk-assessed and large-scale events undergo additional assessments. Security staff are often in attendance at many of our events to help provide support and guidance as needed.

"The University leadership and management engage in periodic crisis response and management training.

“We will continue to review any further guidance from the Government to ensure we continue to exceed all safety requirements.”

Sports stadiums, tourist attractions, shopping centres, large organisations and open spaces may all have this rule applied.

We reached out to Sixways Stadium and the Worcestershire County Cricket Ground but did not receive a response.
