A man is in a critical condition after being hit by a lorry on the M5. 

Police, ambulance and fire crews were all called to the scene at around 7.40pm last night after reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a lorry on the M5 between J7 (Worcester) and J8 (M50) southbound. 

On arrival they discovered a man had suffered multiple serious injuries during the incident. 

He was given specialist trauma care at the scene before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he remains in a critical condition. 

An eight-hour road closure was put in place with fire service crews assisting with lighting as a police led investigation was carried out.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian on the M5, between junctions 7 and 8, at 7.40pm last night.

"One ambulance, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and two Midland Air Ambulance Critical Care Cars attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one male patient, who was the pedestrian.

"He had suffered multiple serious injuries in the collision and received specialist trauma care at the scene before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in a critical condition."

A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue said: "Crews from Worcester, Droitwich, Upton-upon-Severn and Evesham were called to an RTC on the M5 Southbound between junctions 7 and 8 at 19:38 on January 17.

"The RTC involved a HGV and one male casualty who was handed over to the care of the ambulance service.

"A full motorway closure was in place with fire service crews assisting with lighting as a collision investigation was carried out.

"Police and Highways England also attended with the incident declared as closed at 22:43."

Drivers who were caught between the incident and junction 7 were turned around and escorted back to the Worcester exit. 

A diversion route was put in place for motorists throughout the evening and early hours of this morning.

National Highways for West Midlands confirmed the road had been reopened shortly before 5am this morning.
