THERE have been more encouraging signs Covid cases are falling throughout Worcestershire.

Latest data from Public Health England (PHE) shows much of the county is seeing numbers now matching or below those of a few weeks ago.

There were 6,571 county coronavirus cases in the week up to January 12 - a 33.4 per cent drop - the PHE figures show.

In comparison, in the week up to January 4, there were 9,986 Covid cases in Worcestershire following Omicron becoming the dominant coronavirus variant.

The 6,571 figure is also the lowest recorded since the week up to December 28 when there were 6,959 cases.

Worcester had 1,230 cases in the week to January 12, a 23.8 per cent fall. In comparison, in the seven days to January 4, there were 1,643.

Malvern had 617 cases in the week to January 12, a 33.9 per cent drop, while in the week to January 4 there were 940.

Wychavon, which includes Droitwich and Evesham, had 1,217 Covid cases recorded to January 12, a 35.1 per cent drop. In the week to January 4 there were 1,865 cases.

Bromsgrove has seen a 34.1 per cent fall to 1,175 cases in the latest week. That is compared to 1,835 in the week to January 4.

Redditch had 935 cases recorded in the latest week a fall of 43.2 per cent. In the week to January 4 there were 1,705 cases.

And Wyre Forest, which includes Kidderminster, had 1,397 cases, a fall of 30.4 per cent in the week to January 12. In comparison, to January 4, there were 1,998 cases.

Meanwhile seven people died from coronavirus across 'all settings' the latest week of Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures reveal.

A Malvern resident and Worcester both died at home where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

A Redditch resident and a person from Wyre Forest died in hospital. One person from Bromsgrove died in a care home.

And two people from Wychavon died; one in a care home another in hospital.

Nobody died in a hospice, communal establishment or another setting in that week, according to the ONS data.

The seven deaths, in the week up to January 7, means a total of 1,509 people have so far died from Covid-19 in ‘all settings’ in Worcestershire.
