A private hospital in Worcester has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an unannounced inspection.

Inspectors looked into surgical services at Spire South Bank Hospital in December 2021 and published their report yesterday (February 10).

The CQC rated the surgical department ‘Good’ and upgraded the hospital’s overall rating to ‘Good’.

A previous inspection in 2016 rated Spire South Bank as ‘Requires Improvement’.

During its latest inspection, the CQC says staff “treated patients with compassion and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity, took account of their individual needs, and helped them understand their conditions.”

The CQC also praised the way that the hospital tailored services to meet patients’ individual needs and the needs of the local community.

Inspectors said the storage of equipment was an issue within the ward and theatres, which meant some areas were cluttered. But this did not impact on patient safety or access to areas, the report says.

The report means 38 of Spire’s 40 hospitals across the UK are rated ‘Good, ’Outstanding’ or the equivalent in Scotland and Wales.

Dawn Pickrell, hospital director at Spire South Bank, said: “This ‘Good’ rating from the CQC is a testament to the hard work, commitment and compassion of all of our colleagues.

Pandemic challenges

“They’ve risen to the challenges posed by the pandemic over the past two years, putting the delivery of exceptional care to patients and their families at the heart of everything they do.

“Our sights are now firmly on aiming for an ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating, the next time we are inspected.”

Justin Ash, chief executive at Spire Healthcare, added: “This report is a well-deserved recognition of the dedication shown by my colleagues at South Bank Hospital.

“I’m exceptionally proud of the focus the team has placed on delivering high quality, compassionate and personalised care to all our patients and the wider community.

“I’m delighted that 95% of our hospitals are now rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding.’ The report moves us one step closer towards our aim of securing a ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ rating for all of our Spire hospitals.”
