POLICE have revealed they believe one of the cars in a fatal head on crash on the A449 was going in the wrong direction at the time.

West Mercia Police is appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage as officers continue to investigate the crash in which two men died.

The crash took place near to the Ombersley junction of the A449 of the Worcester bound carriageway at around 9.30pm on Wednesday, (March 2).

A police spokesperson said: "Sadly, the drivers of both vehicles died at the scene.

"While the investigation is ongoing, officers believe that one of the cars, a white Ford Mondeo, was travelling in the wrong direction and will have joined the A449 after taking the incorrect slip road and collided with an oncoming car, a black Vauxhall Astra.

"Our thoughts are with both families of the victims at what will be terribly sad time for everyone and next of kin of both victims have been notified."

Police closed the A449 in both directions overnight for an investigation, the road reopening earlier this morning.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Upon arrival we found the drivers of the two cars both in a critical condition.

"Unfortunately, it immediately became apparent that nothing more could be done to save them and they were confirmed deceased at the scene."

One ambulance, two paramedic officers and a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic attended the scene, as well as firefighters from Worcester and Droitwich.
