AN HISTORIC lamp stolen from Worcester Bridge has been discovered in black bags dumped on a school's playing fields.

A member of the public spotted the bulky black sack on Royal Grammar School Worcester's Flagge Meadow playing fields.

They contacted the school who discovered the missing 100-year-old lamp inside.

It had fallen from the lamppost along Worcester Bridge on Friday, February 18 during Storm Eunice.

An unknown person then picked it up and was spotted on CCTV walking away with it leading Worcestershire County Council to make an appeal.

Sean Lloyd, head groundsman at the school on Upper Tything, said: "The lamp was found abandoned on RGS Flagge Meadow playing field.

"It had been wrapped in a plastic bag transferred and thrown onto the fields, it is currently stored awaiting collection."

Storm Eunice ripped the lamp out of its fixing with high winds reaching 60 mph.

A member of the public noticed the damage but it had gone by the time staff from county council contractor Prysmian went to the bridge.

Jon Fraser, Worcestershire County Council Highways said, “We are grateful to everyone who has spread the word about our missing lantern. We are thrilled to see it returned and want to thank the member of the public who spotted it and the Royal Grammar School for keeping it safe. We will be liaising with RGS on collection so that we can arrange for it to be refurbished and then restore it to its rightful place.”

A spokesperson from RGS has said: “The school do not know much about it, other than it has been disposed of in one of our sports fields.

"We are delighted it has been found and of course, will support local authorities in getting it back to its rightful home.”
