83 bed student housing taking from at old Images Nightclub

New pictures show crews working on the installation of walls, as the structure of the future accommodation begins to take place.

Works first began on demolishing the site in November 2021. 

The plans were first approved back in November 2019 by the Worcester City Council planning committee.

The plans were for a seven-storey building on the site of the derelict former nightclub in The Butts.

The original 112-bed plan was altered to a 110-bed nine-storey plan to make the accommodation building the same height as The Hive.

A subsequent plan put forward in May 2019, asked for permission to build a 100-bed building but was soon reduced to 89 beds before finally settling on an 83-bed building.

The plans were met with some criticism at the time from city councillors, who suggested that the plans would disrupt traffic.

The derelict building, which dated back to the 1870s, has been totally demolished so work can begin on building student accommodation on the site.

The works were originally being taken on by Thorneloe Developments and have since been taken on by Rengen Developments.

In December 2021, the plans were expected to be finished in early 2023.

After years as one of the top nightspots in Worcester, the building has been empty since its later reincarnation as Funk nightclub closed down in February 2012.

In 2014, the city council's licensing sub-committee gave the green light for the site to become a club named Mamma Jammas.

The club was aimed at the over 30s and the plans had fierce opposition from West Mercia Police who believed the venue would increase crime in the area.

But the plans never came to fruition and the building remained an eyesore.
