A DRUNK man kicked a police officer in the testicles after refusing to move on from outside a city pub.

Gregory Macloed was given a large fine for assaulting PC Storey when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Macloed, of Sheridan Row, Worcester, admitted common assault by beating an emergency worker and being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

Magistrates heard officers had originally been called to the Royal Exchange pub on the night of Friday, April 8 because of reports of a woman causing a disturbance.

While attending the incident attention quickly shifted to Macloed.

Prosecutor Melanie Winterflood said the 31-year-old had been followed by door staff as was leaving the pub with a full pint of alcohol.

"The alcohol was returned, but at that point he became argumentative (with police)," the prosecutor said.

"Officers gave him a number of chances to leave. He wasn't leaving despite a number of requests.

Miss Winterfold said Macleod had appeared unsteady on his feet and was slurring his words, so officers took the view he was heavily intoxicated.

The prosecutor said he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly, and while being taken to a police van he committed the assault.

"He kicked out and contacted the officer between his legs, contacting his testicles, and was in pain," Miss Winterfold said.

A statement from PC Storey was read out in court that said he expected confrontation as a police officer, but that it didn't give people the right to push him around or kick him in that way.

Belinda Ariss, defending Macleod, said her client worked full time in property management and had no previous convictions.

Mrs Ariss explained on the day of the incident Macloed had become separated from friends.

"When he returned his drink to the bar, things escalated sadly," Mrs Ariss said.

"He kicked out recklessly, he was getting in the van and lashed out.

"He is extremely sorry. He knows police have a job to do, they don't need drunks like him acting foolishly."

She added Macloed recognised he had an issue with alcohol, and was now attending AA meetings regularly.

After a short deliberation, chairman of the bench Gareth Thomas told Macleod he was being fined.

"We take assaults on police officers very seriously in these courts," Mr Thomas said. Worcester News: COURT: Worcester Magistrates CourtCOURT: Worcester Magistrates Court (Image: Newsquest)

He ordered Macloed pay the officer £100 in compensation and fined him £500.

Macloed was also ordered to pay £50 victim surcharge, and costs of £185.

Macloed agreed to pay the total, £835, at a rate of £80 a month.
