A Worcester school pupil has been chosen for a national rowing squad.

Alice Baker, Captain of Boats at The King's School in Worcester, will be joining 30 other athletes to represent Great Britain at the International Junior Regatta in Munich this weekend.

Miss Baker will be competing as part of the U19 GB rowing squad.

She said: "After a very long and challenging trials process, I’m over the moon with the news and so very excited and also slightly nervous to be competing with and against some world-class rowers.

"Training with the U19 GB squad provides an incredible opportunity that will give me some great experience for more racing in the summer months.

"My passion for rowing started here at King’s and I’ve been so fortunate to receive incredible support and coaching from the King’s Boat Club and the wider King’s rowing community.”

The event, which is the first international racing event since the pandemic, will see the team experience a high-level competition, racing against top-class European crews, offering an incredible development opportunity to compete at world-class level.

Jim Chalmer, Head of Rowing at King’s Worcester added: “We are incredibly proud of Alice and her achievements in rowing.

"Her selection to this Great Britain Rowing Team demonstrates her prowess in a boat at such a level after a string of national medals and records, alongside a world championship medal, on the indoor rower over the past years.

"Alice is a highly talented athlete, but most importantly she works extremely hard to realise her potential.

"She is an inspiration to all our rowers and the wider school community.

"We wish her the very best at her first international regatta, knowing there will be many more to come.”

Miss Baker achieved Silver in the gruelling 2,000-metre World Rowing Indoor Championships in February 2021 and Gold in the Under 18 Women’s Pair at the British Junior Rowing Championship in July 2021.
