A WORCESTER man has been stabbed during a visit to his homeland in Poland.

A friend has said Mateusz Gawronski, known as Mati, is in a serious condition after the stabbing at the end of last week in Bielawa, Poland.

And fundraisers are being set up to raise money for the 28-year-old, who lives in Rose Avenue, and has been working at a construction site after previously working at Worcester Bosch.

Samanta Jagielczuk said: "Mateusz went on holiday to see his family in Poland, that's where it happened.

"Mati is in serious condition. He suffered many wounds, lungs were punctured, he lost a lot of blood, there was a cardiac arrest and brain hypoxia.

"Hopefully he will recover."

She believes he was attacked possibly in two separate incidents.

She said one man is in custody and police are hunting three men in their 30s.

She said her friend Mati is a "strong wonderful man" adding he could win his battle for life.

A Polish fundraising page has already been set up to raise money to help with his recovery.

His friends say they are in the process of setting up an English fundraising page at the moment.
