A new chippy coming to Worcester will offer fish and chips for less than £1 on its opening day.

Mother Hubbard’s Famous Fish & Chips is opening on Shrub Hill Retail Park on Saturday, May 21.

And the first 1,000 customers will get a regular fish and chips for just 45p - the cost of the meal when the first Mother Hubbard’s opened in Bradford in 1972.

Long queues are expected to form at the retail park after a Facebook post announcing the opening day offer attracted a lot of attention.

Back in 2009, the first KFC to open in Worcester attracted hour-long queues and swarming gulls, although the opening of a second city branch was a quieter affair.

The chain now has branches across the north of England, with Worcester following in Birmingham’s footsteps in bringing Mother Hubbard’s to the Midlands.

Franchise owner Zahid Lone, from Worcester, told the Worcester News he is excited about the opening.

Eat in or takeaway

“It’s very exciting. People have been stopping me in town to ask when we are going to open and people walking past are always stopping and asking questions,” he said.

“There has been a lot of encouragement from local people - it’s very good. And there'll be a special offer on opening day.”

The restaurant will offer on-site dining as well as a takeaway option. The counter and ceiling will feature large video screens showing clips of sharks and fish, while on the walls will be old photographs of Worcester.

These will include some historic Tallow Hill landmarks such as the Beehive pub, which closed in 2002, and Shrub Hill Hospital, previously known as Hillborough, which shut in 1978.

The first Mother Hubbard’s, in Ingleby Road, Bradford, was opened on May 3, 1972 by Coronation Street favourites Stan and Hilda Ogden.

“We have a modern feel but still with the traditional taste to take you back to your childhood memories,” the company’s website says.

“We have the capacity to seat 60 guests in an air conditioned and clean environment, to ensure that you enjoy the experience of dining at Mother Hubbard’s.

“At Mother Hubbard’s, we are passionate about great tasting food. We only use the finest Icelandic haddock and British potatoes to produce the crispiest battered fresh fish and golden chips.”
