A KEY route between Worcester and Malvern is set to re-open after being closed all weekend for work.

The Temeside Way stretch of the A4440 including Carrington Bridge has been shut since Friday evening (May 13).

With the final work having been completed, the road is due to re-open at 5.30am on Monday (May 16).

The work saw traffic chaos on Saturday morning with motorists forced to take alternate routes around the city to get through to Powick Roundabout and beyond.

Cars could be seen queueing along the length of London Road in Worcester throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

Public transport was also disrupted with First Worcester confirming the 32, 44 and 45 routes were all disrupted as a result of the work.

The 11.23 44 service from Worcester to Malvern was also cancelled, making it harder for people to travel between the two.

An ambulance was also seen trying to negotiate the traffic, with cars on both sides of the road making passage difficult.

Sunday's traffic was easier, however, with less of the disruption experienced on Saturday.

Work to turn the A4440 into a dual carriageway is one of Worcestershire County Council’s biggest infrastructure projects.

Carrington Bridge opened to traffic for the first time last year and forms part of a £55 million programme of work that also includes a new underpass at Ketch roundabout, work on the Ketch viewpoint and cycle path and footpath improvements.

The A4440 has already been ‘dualled’ between Junction 7 of the M5 and the Ketch roundabout and three new footbridges have been opened - at Crookbarrow Way, Broomhall Way and Hams Way.
