Worcester Carnival has been given a £10,000 funding boost by the National Lottery.
The popular event, which is returning to the city’s streets for the first time since 2019, takes place on Saturday, July 2.
It had been cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic.
Returning with the theme of ‘celebration’, the carnival is benefitting from a grant from The National Lottery Community Fund.
The event is intended to be a celebration of Worcester, the place and the people. Everyone across Worcester and further afield is encouraged to come and join in.
The new National Lottery funding will mean that there will be a full day of events including entertainment outside the Guildhall and a carnival village at Pitchcroft from 11am.
This will include live performances, a children’s fair, climbing wall, inflatables, food and craft stalls and several sporting activities including the ever-popular football tournament.
Worcester Carnival charity partners
The parade starts at 3pm and volunteers will be collecting for the carnival’s charity partners - the Worcester Warriors Community Foundation, Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust and the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA).
The Warriors’ community foundation aims to inspire young people to live healthy, active lifestyles through the power of sport.
The Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust raises awareness and funds research into rare childhood cancers, and SARA is a volunteer lifeboat and inland search and rescue charity with lifeboat rescue stations along the length of the Severn.
Angela Derbyshire, who volunteers on the carnival committee, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, this grant means that we can make this a day to remember for communities across Worcester and bringing in new visitors to support our city.”
During the pandemic, in 2020 alone, The National Lottery Community Fund distributed almost £1 billion to charities and community organisations across the UK.
