A PROLIFIC shoplifter who stole meat and clothes from Worcester High Street shops and who was caught carrying a knife, has finally been jailed.

Sam Wood, of Barbourne Road, Worcester, had avoided jail but magistrates decided it was the last straw after hearing the details of the theft of goods worth more than £200 and the knife offence.

Wood, aged 32, had targeted TX Maxx, leading him to be banned from that store as part of his bail.

In March magistrates had adjourned the case for an all-options pre-sentence report to be prepared, after his solicitor, Mark Turnbull, had requested one due to the risk of him being jailed.

On May 11, Wood again appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court this time for sentencing.

Magistrates heard Wood had stolen a coat worth £79, belonging to TK Maxx, on October 19 last year, and, a day later on October 20, he stole a tracksuit worth £77.98 from Sports Direct.

Wood had then returned to the TK Maxx store, on November 11, and stole clothing worth £99.

He stole various meat items from Marks and Spencer on October 4 last year.

Wood had previously admitted the offence of possessing a knife blade / sharp pointed article in a public place without good reason or lawful authority, having been caught with a craft knife in Worcester on November 18 last year.

And Wood had also pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to police/court bail having, without reasonable cause, failed to surrender to custody at Worcester Police Station having been released on bail.

For the offence of carrying a knife magistrates jailed him for 16 weeks.

Sam Wood's record of offending led to him being jailed

Magistrates said they were also jailing him for the thefts as the spree was so serious because it was aggravated by the defendant’s record of offending.

For the thefts he was given a total of eight weeks, the sentences running concurrently.

Wood was told to pay a victim surcharge of £128, to be paid by August 28. There was no order for costs.
