A NEW micropub could be set to open opposite a Worcester Wetherspoons.

Developers plan to turn 61 Broad Street into a new drinking spot, located just across the street from The Crown, one of Worcester's branches of Wetherspoons.

An application has been sent to Worcester City Council asking for permission to change the famous narrow building from commercial premises into a micropub.

At the moment, plans are in an early stage, with documents saying it is only to establish that the change of use is acceptable.

No internal or external works are being proposed yet with the planning statement saying: "The application does not propose any internal or external works at this stage, but if successful, then a Planning and Listed Building application for such works would then be formally submitted."

Although primarily an evening or nighttime activity, the micro-pub would be open during the day 11am until 11pm.

It could also sell beer for retail, not just for drinking on-site.

The application continued: "The application property is currently vacant, but the surrounding units are tenanted, thus bringing this building into active use will continue to help support the city centre and avoid any dead frontages.

"The complimentary use and added footfall generated will only serve to help benefit the city centre as a whole."

61 Broad Street is a Grade II listed building, famously narrow and thin in a block of terraces.

It is currently a vacant shop located next door to Cafe Nero and directly opposite The Crown.

It was formerly known as Cupola House and is believed to have been built sometime in the 1740s.

In the 1830s, naturalist and printer Edwin Lees lived at Cupola House, writing both "A Natural History of Worcestershire" and "The Stranger's Guide to Worcester".

From 1896 to 1940 it was owned by Miss Burrow, a corsetmaker.

In recent years it has been the location of a number of shops, including a vape shop.

It is currently a phone repair shop.
