ANIMALS in distress are in safe hands thanks to the fire service’s latest upgrades.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service has received new appliances for their fleet which will allow them to better help animals in need.

Between January 2017 and December 2021, HWFRS’ animal rescue teams attended nearly 90 animal rescues, finding creatures in all manner of situations.

As such, the large animal rescue teams at the Pershore and Bromyard stations have received new appliances which allow their fleet to carry animal rescue boards and additional specialized equipment.

Group commander Lee Watson, head of operational logistics at HWFRS, said:

“The new appliances at Pershore and Bromyard are a welcome boost to our animal rescue capability. We are often called out to their rescue, whether farm animals that have fallen into rivers or ditches, or pets stuck up trees or down drains!”

“I’m pleased that we can offer an even better service to our two counties, where farm animals and pets are such an important part of the community.”

The new appliances have a 15-year lifespan, making them an important resource for the service.

There has also been two further ‘B type’ appliances delivered to stations in Worcester and Kington as part of the service’s fleet replacement programme.

All four appliances have increased water capacity of 3,000 litres, compared with the standard 1,800 capacity.

The appliances also have the most up to date road safety systems and an electronic pumping control system.
