It was a lucky escape for a badger that got trapped in sewage works near Worcester.

The critter was spotted six metres down a concrete pit at Kempsey Sewage Works on Pixham Ferry Lane.

A call was made to the RSPCA who were able to quickly remove the badger.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Freya Lamb said: “This poor badger had really got himself into a difficult situation as he wasn’t able to get out of the deep pit.

“He luckily didn’t have any visible injuries and was hissing and walking fine.

“The pit is a storm tank to stop heavy rain overflowing into the sewage pits, so thank goodness it was empty and it wasn’t raining! He was lucky he picked a sunny weekend to fall in.”

The badger was spotted in the pit on the morning of May 23.

Freya entered the storm tank, using a ladder and specialist equipment, where she was able to catch the badger.

He was then released, having not sustained any injuries.

“It’s always great to be able to rescue a wild animal like this and release them there and then so as not to cause them any further distress,” said Freya.

“He was very lucky because he could have easily perished stuck down in the pit without anything to eat or drink.”

The RSPCA urges people to act with caution when around wild animals such as badgers and foxes, which may bite or scratch when scared, sick or injured.

Furthermore, anyone concerned for an animal's welfare is asked to visit the charity's website for advice and not attempt a rescue themselves.

In an emergency situation, call the RSPCA's emergency line on 0300 1234 999 or contact vets, police, or other welfare charities.
