A shop assistant is still shaken after rushing to the aid of a motorcyclist who crashed his bike.

Carolyn Ward is one of two staff members at Warner's Supermarket whose swift actions have been praised by police.

Ms Ward was walking to work in Hanley Road when she saw a motorcyclist swerve to avoid a car and come off his bike.

“The traffic was backing all the way up and the biker was overtaking traffic slowly, then a car pulled out so he had to swerve to avoid it and the bike fell on his ankle,” she said.

“I can’t lift a Harley Davidson but people in cars got out and got the bike off him.

“The manager Jack is a first aider so he did the first aid - I just put ice on his ankle and waited with him until the ambulance arrived.

“I was probably out there for about 45 minutes helping out and waiting for the emergency services to turn up.

“It was a bit scary and I didn’t stop shaking for about 30 minutes afterwards. I don’t know how the man is - I hope he’s ok.”

West Mercia Police thanked Warner’s staff for their help following the crash.

“Today there was a collision between a car and motorcycle outside Warner’s Supermarket, Upton,” they said.

“A big thank you to Carolyn and Jack (from Warner’s) for giving initial first aid before emergency services arrived.”

New roundabout opened in Upton

Ms Ward added that she hoped the opening of the new roundabout in Upton would mean fewer cars backing up and fewer accidents.

The opening of the roundabout, which replaced the junction of the A38 and the A4104, was delayed by an hour yesterday morning.

Road closures were in place for a time as traffic was switched onto the new road layout.

Warner’s Supermarket opened in Hanley Road last month with the aim of “building on the strong relationships developed with local producers at Warner’s Budgens over the last 15 years”.

The store offers locally-sourced food and drink as well as Morrisons products.
