A group of travellers have left a Pershore park following police intervention.

Wychavon District Council was made aware of an "unauthorised encampment" at Abbey Park on Thursday evening.

Police were quick to attend the scene and the group left the same evening.

The group had been able to set up at the park despite the installation of barriers earlier this year.

As such, the council will be looking to increase security.

A spokesperson said: “On Thursday evening we received a report of an unauthorised encampment on Abbey Park in Pershore.

"Thanks to the barrier we had installed, it was clear the park had been accessed by a criminal act.

"Police attended and the group left the park later the same evening."

They added: "In light of this event we are looking at additional ways we can further strengthen the protections around the lockable gates.

“We are aware the group have moved on to private land elsewhere in the district. We will be offering advice to the landowner.”

The group has now set up at Cherry Tree Park in Claines, just off of Ombersley Road.

Several caravans have been parked on a field between two housing developments.

A dog walker who lives in the housing next to the encampment said: "I'm not thrilled about it but they have children and someone said they had spoken to them and apparently they are only planning to be here for two or three days.

"If this is a safe haven for their children and a break from travelling 24/7 then for two or three days a year out of the 365 that we live here then that's ok.

"I don't want it to become a regular occurrence though."

They added: "My mother-in-law lives in one of the houses opposite and she's terrified to leave her house at the minute."
