The Breastfeeding Support Team, has been nominated for the Health Care Team Award in our Worcester Health and Social Care 2022.

The team is part of the Starting Well Partnership and was nominated by Dr Ayşe Gürpınar.

Dr Gürpınar said: "The team have helped me and hundreds of women over the last year navigate the challenges of learning to breastfeed newborn babies - in a pandemic therefore with no access to face-to-face support.

"The team run a What's App group with over 150 Worcestershire breastfeeding mums where we can all access advice and support of the team, as well as peer support at all hours.

"The team helped me with one-to-one video calls in the early weeks and then continued to help with troubleshooting, as the challenges of breastfeeding shift as the baby gets older.

"Without the team, I would not have identified my early feeding problems and would have been forced to stop.

"The support has enabled me to reach one year of breastfeeding, which would never have been possible without them and I know this is true of so many of the mums in the group."

A spokesperson for the Breastfeeding Support Team said: "The team feel honoured to be nominated, it's a great achievement.

"We feel passionate about what we do and to be acknowledged by mums is lovely, and shows how important our service is to Worcestershire families.

The Breastfeeding Support Team provides families in Worcestershire support to successfully achieve their breastfeeding goals.

"All mothers instinctively want to feed their baby, but many are apprehensive and unsure about feeding in the early days.

"Having access to breastfeeding support to provide emotional and practical guidance should be the right of every new parent to protect both their physical and mental health at a time when they are very vulnerable, and this is where we come in.

"We say, 'it's natural like walking, not like breathing!'"

The Worcestershire Health and Social Care Awards are being held in conjunction with the University of Worcester.
