HEALTH chiefs have refused to overturn their decision to close Bransford ambulance control centre, despite facing a legal challenge in the High Court.

A Letter Before Claim was served on West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust two weeks ago, by campaigners fighting to save the centre.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Richard Burt, who brought about the legal action, said the trust's lengthy response had disputed claims its decision to close the centre was unlawful and said was not prepared to change its mind.

He said barristers acting on behalf of the campaigners will now consider the response and decide whether to proceed with a Judicial Review to the High Court.

"We are disappointed but not surprised at the trust's refusal to reverse the decision," said Mr Burt, who brought the action, along with staff at the Bransford centre.

"We are still confident we can take the matter forward for Judicial Review at the High Court."

Your Worcester News led a lengthy campaign against the closure of Bransford Emergency Operations Centre, when more than 2,000 people signed a petition. People were concerned that closing the centre could result in a loss of local knowledge and would ultimately endanger lives.

Mr Burt said a decision would be made within the next 10 days whether or not to proceed with the legal action.

A spokesman for the trust refused to confirm what the trust's response to the Letter Before Claim had been. She would only say: "I can confirm that the trust has responded."

The claim has been lodged in the name of a concerned member of the public. Legal aid has been granted, but up to £5,000 will still need to be raised to cover legal costs.
