THE University of Worcester has appointed the UK's first professor of perinatal education.

Professor Mary Nolan has an international reputation as a speaker, author and leading educator in antenatal care and specifically the perinatal period, which covers the period of care for baby, mother and family immediately before and after birth.

Professor Nolan is the author of more than a dozen books and more than 100 articles on the subject.

Her inaugural lecture at the university, entitled, Education For Birth And Parenting: A Global Perspective, will draw upon Professor Nolan's 25 years of expertise. This includes her time working as a nurse and as both an antenatal teacher and tutor of antenatal teachers with the National Childbirth Trust, the largest parenting educational charity in Europe.

The talk will explore women's experiences of maternity care services and show why education in this area is more vital than ever, in Britain and worldwide.

University of Worcester Vice Chancellor Professor David Green said the university was delighted to be creating a UK first for Worcester.

"Professor Mary Nolan has worked extensively within childbirth education as author, policy adviser, educator and inspiring international speaker," he said. "Her appointment reflects the university's commitment to the improvement of maternity and perinatal services, which is such a vital part of the public care agenda.

"Mary's wealth of experience will be invaluable to our students and the wider community we serve.

"Her appointment will help the university ensure that we continue to fulfil our vital role of training the next generation of nurses, midwives and psychologists."

Professor Nolan has developed a range of training and education programmes for the National Childbirth Trust and will be working with trainee nurses, psychologists and midwives, within the Institute of Health, Social Care and Psychology.

Professor Nolan's inaugural lecture, Educating for Birth and Parenting: a global perspective, will be held at the University of Worcester's St John's campus, Worcester, on Wednesday, February 27, from 5.30pm. For information, contact Anna Speakman on 01905 542018 or e-mail events@worc.ac.uk
