HUNDREDS of people want to see a new cycling track built in Droitwich.

An online petition to build a pump track in the town has been gaining momentum, and now has 580 signatures.

The petition was launched by Martin Maycroft, who grew up in Droitwich and is hoping to create something for the town’s youngsters to enjoy.

He said: “We're looking to help build not just a pump track but a local community.

“A project that brings people together, giving people of all ages a free and enjoyable way to exercise and make new friends.

“I know personally that the town had very little to offer for the younger generation from when I was growing up.”

He added: “Kids on bikes, scooters and skateboards seem to be pushed aside and forgotten about or moved on to another location, anywhere that's not 'in the way causing nuisance’.

“Well, this gives them somewhere to go, helps them learn new skills, make new friends.

“This gives people a place to learn how to ride a bike safely.

“We have tracks across the country that have been a massive success and I see no reason this can't have the same effect.”

A similar track was recently opened in Wychbold, following suggestions from local teenagers.

Worcestershire County councillor for Droitwich West Richard Morris is among those backing the town project.

He said: “I have worked with the terrific and very enthusiastic team wanting a pump track and there is a large swell of support for the idea, as well as a new skate park, in Droitwich.

“Unfortunately, we have struggled to find suitable land, but I’m pleased that Wychavon District Council has built a pump track into the feasibility for the new leisure centre.”

In June, Wychavon District Council announced that it would be looking to demolish the current leisure centre, on Briar Mill, as it had been deemed not fit for purpose.

A new site, costing £20 to £25 million, will be built on the same land.

At an executive board meeting, councillors agreed to spend up to £500,000 on a feasibility study to explore the proposal in more detail and come up with a final option for approval.
