A potential new cycling track in Droitwich has hit a stumbling block

Hundreds of people have signed a petition to see a pump track built in the town.

However, the Mayor of Droitwich, Councillor George Duffy, says there is one issue, they can’t find anywhere to put it.

He said: “We have been looking at building the pump track in many forms at a lot of sites in Droitwich, each with their own challenges, so it can be disheartening when some plans do not pan out but seeing people continue to support the goal keeps us going.”

Last month, councillor Duffy met with the manager of Droitwich Leisure Centre, Tim Kirkham, to discuss the idea.

Mr Kirkham said: “It’s not a grand scheme yet but we were looking at building some smaller jumps for the youngsters and beginners, which will hopefully lead on to bigger and better things

“This is something I know George is passionate about and there’s a group campaigning for the pump track who I have had several meetings with.

“We have lots of space to work with so we will, and always have, worked well with the town council and Wychavon District Council and support them if we can.”

A petition started by Martin Maycroft, who grew up in the town, so far has 591 signatures.

Councillor Duffy is keen for people to get on board with the idea.

He said: “The volunteers who have been running this project and have set up this petition have shown such great passion and vision for the idea so please support this petition.

“BMX pump tracks have shown themselves great places for young people to get interested in bikes as well as getting adults back outside.

“Cycling has, for much longer, been a passion of mine only for getting around so I have been so excited by the opportunity to create something for everyone to enjoy that gets more people outside and cycling.”

He added: “Talking to town, district and service provider officers, there is a lot of appetite for the idea in the people that keep our parks and leisure working as well as they do but they are just as focused as I am on making sure any new facilities work well with what we have already.

“Whilst we find ways to build a track that safely supports its users as well those around it, please support the Droitwich Pump Track Facebook page and this petition to help secure new facilities in Droitwich.”
