STUDENTS at a Worcester sixth form have earned “fabulous” A-levels grades despite being a generation that didn’t get to sit their GCSEs.

Christopher Whitehead Language College said it was delighted with its students’ results.

“This cohort were denied the opportunity to prove themselves in GCSE exams, instead having their grades crudely calculated by an algorithm, and have had to deal with the stresses of uncertainty around how they will be assessed at the end of their courses,” the school said in a statement.

“To sit formal examinations for the first time at the end of year 13 makes their achievements even more praiseworthy. We are proud of every one of our year 13 students, many of whom have persevered and succeeded in the face of significant personal adversity.”

Headteacher Neil Morris said: “I’m really delighted with the results - this is such a resilient year group.

“It’s the first time in three years we’ve done exams so they’ve been guinea pigs in a way. They did them in the stifling heat and with Covid going on in the background - we’ve had it all really.

“The headline figure is that the overall grade is a B, which is a fabulous grade. All 107 of our A-level students are going off to their various destinations.

“It’s been such a difficult last three years and I’m so pleased for the staff, too, who have calmly carried on.”

Lewis Guest is leaving to study history and politics at the University of Cambridge, having achieved A*AA and Helen Chevalier is going on to study medicine at the University of Birmingham having achieved A*AA.

The school also highlighted the results of Freddie Costello (A*A*AA), Robbie Freeman (A*A*A*), Nancy Wells (A*A*A*A*), and Chloe Bayfield, who is going on to study forensics and applied biology at the University of Worcester after achieving three Distinctions in her BTEC courses.

“Our overall school average grade has increased from a C to a B this year, and we are proud to send our students off to their chosen destinations,” the school said.
