WORCESTER has been named the second most aesthetic city in the UK. 

The city - which has the beautiful Cathedral, winding river Severn and historic streets, was only beaten by Oxford.

Worcester was awarded an "aesthetic city score" of 7.98/10, only a fraction lower than the first place city of Oxford which was rated 8.39/10. 

Mayor of Worcester, councillor Adrian Gregson, said: “It’s great to see Worcester becoming so popular with visitors, we’re proud of our beautiful city and everything it has to offer tourists.

“Worcester was named as one of the top ten best UK cities for a staycation in a recent Which? survey, and this latest accolade of being the country’s second most aesthetic city just proves what we have known all along – it is a fantastic destination with a lot to offer.

"Worcester has it all - beautiful buildings, award-winning parks, a great shopping experience, a thriving nightlife and an excellent programme of events and entertainment.”

The survey, by Atlas Ceramics, assessed the number of boutique hotels, listed buildings and monuments, interior designers and architects in each destination to reach their results. You can review the research here.

A spokesperson for Atlas Ceramics said: "Taking second place is Worcester with a score of 7.98/10.

"This West Midlands city is famous for its cathedral and ranks in the top ten for three factors, and the top 20 for architects per 100,000 people too."

Some of the cities that Worcester was voted over were Exeter, which came in third place, as well as Durham which was named as one of the three least aesthetic UK cities. 

When Worcester was named in the top ten cities for a staycation, residents spoke out of their appreciation for the city. 

Wendy Wallace said: "I love love love living in Worcester, I feel very fortunate to live here and I feel it is developing all the time.

"There is a beautiful sense of community and me and my kids are never short of things to do and see."

Paul Harding said: "We are so very lucky to have so much on the doorstep.

"From a beautiful Riverside to lots of attractions such as Tudor House and Worcester Cathedral.

"We also have some fantastic parks too. Many are also free."
