POLICE have closed a road in Worcester after long queues formed for the opening of a new pizza restaurant. 

Officers have shut both ends of Angel Street after a crowd gathered outside Fireaway Pizza for its opening day.

Long queues formed with the promise of free pizzas to the first 100 people to try out the new pizza place. 

The event also promised the appearance of a famous DJ called DMO, who has just under half a million Instagram followers.

As part of a procession, several luxury cars were expected to drive down the street but have been parked near the area instead.

The Worcester News understands that the closure happened over safety fears for pedestrians as the road became crowded with people. No prior road closure for the event had been organised.

Police say the event was 'unplanned' and have warned people to avoid driving to the area.

 

Fireaway Pizza had offered the chance to win free pizza for a year as part of its launch.

The event was also due to have entertainment such as a DJ and fire breathers.

However, the fire breathers were also cancelled at short notice.

The street re-opened at 2.25pm on August 29.
