A Worcestershire nursery has been named "inadequate" by Ofsted, following staff being unaware of a child who was upset in the toilets during the inspection.

Polkadot Childcare was rated "inadequate" in personal development as well as leadership and management.

While the quality of education and behaviour and attitudes were deemed "good", the overall rating released is "inadequate".

Inspectors found that the safety and well-being of children was not assured and that they are not safeguarded well enough.

They said: "Staff allow children in the pre-school room to independently access and use the adjoining bathroom.

"However, staff deployment is ineffective during this time and does not ensure that children are in sight or hearing.

"This compromises children's safety.

"For example, on the day of the inspection, staff were unaware of a child who was upset in the bathroom and were unable to say how long they had been there.

"This poor practice not only puts children at risk but also compromises their emotional well-being.

"The poor supervision of children impacts directly on their personal, social and emotional development.

"That said, the manager and staff clearly understand that play is essential to help promote children's development.

"They provide a rich range of activities to help children to develop their curiosity, and children immerse themselves in their play and learning."

However, alongside these criticisms, inspectors praised the nursery, in Station Road in Pershore, for children's imaginations, creativity and interest in the world around them.

Inspectors added: "Children are keen to share their thoughts and enjoy using new vocabulary.

"They learn to negotiate as they vote for their favourite book. Children behave well and they show concern for others.

"However, they have few opportunities to learn about cultural diversity within the group and the wider community.

A spokesperson for the nursery said: "Whilst we are extremely disappointed with our recent Ofsted grading at Polkadot Pershore, we have reflected on the isolated incident during the inspection.

"We have taken appropriate action to ensure the deployment of staff continues to assure the safety and well-being of children at all times, especially when toileting."
