Worcester Cathedral will hold a special service in honour of the Queen.

The iconic city landmark will hold a Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, this weekend.

Civic and religious leaders will be in attendance and all are welcome to attend.

The Dean of Worcester, Peter Atkinson, said: “We are all deeply saddened by the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, monarch for the whole of the lives of most of us.

“We give thanks to God for her life of selfless and unstinting service, to which she dedicated herself at her Coronation.

“We give thanks too for her inspiring Christian witness.”

He added: “We pray for the Royal Family in their time of grief, and especially for our new King and Queen.

“As at so many times in the history of our city and county down the centuries, we welcome all people to come to Worcester Cathedral to give thanks, to mourn, to remember, to reflect, and to pray for God’s blessing on the new reign.

“God Save The King.”

Before the service, the mayor of Worcester, councillor Adrian Gregson, will lead a procession of dignitaries from the Guildhall to the cathedral.

Worcester is one of many cathedrals holding a special service ahead of the Queen’s funeral on Monday, September 19.

Every cathedral that is part of The Association of English Cathedrals will be open with extended hours to allow people to pay their respects, sign books of condolences, light candles, leave flowers, and say prayers.

Flags at the cathedrals will fly at half-mast while the bells will be muffled.

The service at Worcester Cathedral, at 4pm on Sunday, will be live-streamed on the cathedral’s YouTube channel.

The funeral itself will then be screened on a large screen in Cathedral Square as well as at The Guildhall.
