DOZENS of people have helped create a wildlife wetland as part of the Droitwich canals' restoration project.

The new reedbed has been planted at Coney Meadow, between Salwarpe and the A38, to make up for the removal of an equivalent number of reeds elsewhere as the canals are restored.

The work was funded by community and environmental charity, Welcome to our Future through Severn Waste Environmental Fund (Landfill Communities Fund).

Kim Chester, development manager for The Waterways Trust, said: "Since last autumn 120,000 reeds have been planted creating a 2.4 hectare reedbed, providing habitats for a range of wildlife.

"We are exceptionally grateful to Welcome to our Future for providing the funding for the project and to all the volunteers who have turned out to help with the planting, including staff from Welcome to our Future."
