A WORCESTER man who threatened a police officer with a tyre iron could be jailed for the offence.

Gary Biddle failed to show up for his trial and was convicted, in his absence, of assault of an emergency worker and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

At Worcester Magistrates Court, Prosecutor Sarah Hurd said PC Rimmer attended a 999 call about the 39-year-old's behaviour in Blackpole on June 1, 2021, and on arrival, Biddle had left the scene.

The officer followed in the direction Biddle had gone, knowing the van he drove, and managed to track him down on the A443.

The prosecutor said the officer stopped the vehicle and explained he would be arresting Biddle for an offence.

Bodycam footage was shown to the court showing Biddle say "we will be fighting", before reaching down to the footwell and picking up a tyre iron.

The officer aimed his taser at Biddle before he dropped the tyre iron, and was arrested.

PC Rimmer said: "He brandished the tyre iron, he made movements.

"He pulled it back over his shoulder, as if he was going to throw it.

"I have dealt with him on a number of occasions, he can be an incredibly violent individual.

"On that occasion, I believed I was about to be assaulted, hence use of a taser."

The prosecutor said Biddle, of Lowesmoor, Worcester, was uncooperative in a police interview, swearing at the officers.

Magistrates took a few seconds to reach a conclusion the case had been proved, moving on to sentencing.

Ms Hurd said the outcome was not likely to be good for Biddle given a weapon had been brandished, and an officer on duty had been threatened.

Chairman of the magistrates bench, Richard Poppleton, asked for a pre-sentence report on Biddle to be completed.

Biddle's case was heard at the court on Monday, (September 27).
