A MAN who smashed the window of a Chinese takeaway has been ordered to pay for the damage.

William White appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday, (October 20), admitting an offence of criminal damage to property.

Mark Hambling, prosecuting, said at 10.15pm on March 6 this year White punched the glass window of the Chung Ying Chinese takeaway in London Road with his right hand.

Mr Hambling said: "It leaves a hole in it, and the glass doesn't shatter.

"The window has to be replaced, the repair cost £850."

The prosecutor said White had been caught after police viewed the takeaway's CCTV, identifying the 61-year-old as the culprit.

"Mr White was interviewed, he says he can't remember much that night," Mr Hambling said.

Mr Hambling added White called takeaway staff to offer to pay for the damages, but "money was not forthcoming".

Tariq Khan, defending, highlighted that White had no previous convictions and said he judged him to be a man that would never be in court again.

"The likelihood of reoffending is unlikely," Mr Khan said.

Mr Khan said White had been diagnosed with cancer and the incident had taken place earlier this year when he was having treatment.

Mr Khan explained prior to the incident White had been at the pub drinking with friends, had nothing to eat, and left drunk before causing the damage.

The solicitor said White had been a lorry driver but due to his ill-health he was no longer able to do the job.

Mr Khan suggested a conditional discharge was a possible punishment for White as it would ensure no future offending.

After deliberation Jayne Burton, chairman of the magistrates bench, said they had decided the suitable punishment was a compensation order making White pay for the damage.

White, of Dent Close, Worcester,  was told to pay £850 to the takeaway, with no order for costs or victim surcharge.

White asked if the money could be deduced from his benefits, magistrates agreeing it could be.

In March a staff member at the takeaway told us: “A local got very drunk last night and punched into our glass window.

“We caught him on CCTV and he was kicked out from the pub next door and decided to take out his anger on our window.

“We know who he is, and he has called up to apologise, saying he doesn't remember a thing and will pay for the damages."
