SCAM emails enticing people with fake offers to win a £1,000 supermarket voucher are being shared online.

West Mercia Police has urged people to be on their guard for the scam email after Action Fraud received 277 reports relating to supermarket voucher giveaways in one week.

Supermarket giants like Tesco, Morrisons, and Sainsbury's have all fallen victim to the malicious scam.

The scam email entices shoppers in by saying they are 'one of three people in the final draw' for a £1,000 voucher to spend at one of the supermarkets.

The email then goes on to urge recipients to confirm their details by following the link provided.

However, the links will send recipients to a phishing website which is designed to steal personal details from your device.

West Mercia Police is telling people to watch out for these scam emails and not to click on any links from suspicious emails.

A spokesperson from West Mercia Police said: "The emails state that their recipient is 'one of three people in the final draw' for a £1,000 supermarket voucher, and encourages people to provide links in order to confirm their details.

"The links in the emails lead to phishing websites that are designed to steal your personal information.

"If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly.

"Don't use the numbers or address in the message - use the details from their official website.

"Your bank details (or any other official source) will never ask you to supply personal information via email."

Phishing emails are popular ways to try and trick people out of money. This summer police also warned online users of an Ofgem email scam.

West Mercia Police shared a scam warning from the Met Police’s Cyber Protect team, which says it had received 750 reports of fake Ofgem emails in just four days.

The emails look at first glance like they are from Ofgem and claim the recipient is eligible for a rebate as a result of a new Government scheme.

Links embedded in the emails lead to genuine-looking websites, but these are actually designed to steal personal and financial information.

West Mercia Police are urging people to report the scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk. According to the police, reporting phishing emails has helped remove 184,000 malicious sites since September.
