A THUG who went on a rampage of assaults across Worcestershire sliced his leg open while waiting to be sentenced.

Marc Bell was also ordered by magistrates to come back and appear before them again after they overheard him swearing.

Bell, of Hooper Close, Powick, admitted seven charges of assault by beating, four charges of assault by beating of an emergency worker, and two criminal damage offences when he appeared via videolink to Worcester Magistrates Court.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, provided details of the offences:

  • Bell went into McDonald's in Evesham grabbing a worker by the neck. Bell hit another staff member in the jaw with a single blow, punched another staff member twice in the face, before punching another staff member four times with a clenched fist and running off on September 2.

  • Mr Bell was in the Slug and Lettuce in Worcester on October 7 at around 11pm and became agitated after a glass was taken off him. Bell assaulted and bit security and a manager. Bell had also said: "Do you know who I am, I'm a criminal I will get you shot". 
  • On October 18, in McDonald's in Malvern, Bell punched a woman in the face.

  • in a car park of a Malvern churchyard, Bell damaged two cars with bolt cutters on October 20.
  • Two days later, after being taken into custody, Bell banged his head against the wall of a cell. He spat at officers, bit the arm of one and kicked another.

Mr Beale said: "The Slug and McDonald's staff, and police officers, were doing their jobs and the defendant took his temper out on them."

Mr Beale added Bell had a number of assaults on his record and had been to prison in the past.

Jason Patel, defending, said the 26-year-old accepted the number of offences meant he was facing an inevitable prison sentence. 

Mr Patel said the father-of-one, has depression and ADHD. 

The solicitor explained some of the offending took place after Bell had become frustrated.

Mr Patel added: "He is young man with a poor record with assaults - he clearly needs to address that behaviour."

While Magistrates were deliberating, Bell held up notes to the videolink camera in the booth at HMP Hewell. 

And when Jonathan Wiltshire, chairman of the magistrates, returned prison staff explained Bell had left the room as he had sliced his leg open with his blood on the floor. 

After Bell returned to be sentenced the chairman said the offences were "serious enough" for them to give him a prison sentence, jailing him for a total of 352 days.

Bell was ordered to pay compensation of £50 to all the assault victims, £250 to the victims of the car damage, and told to pay a victim surcharge of £187.

Bell said "I'm not that rich" as he learned he would have to pay a total of £1,237. 

After leaving the booth at the prison Bell was then ordered to return back, the chairman explaining the bench had heard him swearing.
