A LARGE crane that has towered over the city centre will be dismantled.

The work will cause a road closure in Worcester city centre.

The Butts will see an overnight closure between Friday, November 18, and Saturday, November 19.

The closure is for a mobile crane to dismantle the tower crane that has been used to construct the new student accommodation opposite The Hive, on the site of the former Images nightclub.

The closure takes place from 6am on Friday, finishing at around 8pm the next morning.

Between the times no vehicles will be allowed to travel on the road.

First bus services will be diverted – numbers 44, 30, 31 31A, 420, 417.

There will be access from Dolday to and from Cattle Market car park, Virginia House and Heart of Worcester College.

Vehicles leaving Crowngate multi-storey car park will not be able to turn right up The Butts.

Residents and businesses in The Butts or Magdala Court will be able to gain access by turning right from Farrier Street, via a temporary traffic light system which will be manually controlled.

The closed section of The Butts will operate as a two-way street with the one-way order suspended.

The pedestrian crossing by Francini Café Colombia will be turned off whilst the temporary traffic lights are in place.

There will still be access along the footway on The Butts and across the footbridge from the Hive.

Marshals will be on site to assist people.

Jon Fraser, from Worcester County Council's Highways team, said the closure is subject to satisfactory weather conditions, as if it is too windy it will be postponed.

The closure had originally been scheduled to happwn this weekend but a forecast of high winds has forced it to be postponed.
