WORCESTER Green Party hopes to see the first woman MP elected as it announces its candidate for the next general election

Members of the Worcester Green Party have selected Tor Pingree to stand for the next general election.

She was born in Worcester, works as a teacher at Worcester Sixth Form College and formerly stood against Cllr Simon Geraghty for a city council seat in St Clement's back in 2021.

Miss Pingree said that the cost of living crisis and the climate emergency are two of her main focuses if she was to be elected.

She said: “The country is facing a cost of living crisis. We know that creating warm secure homes with better insulation and providing good public transport will tackle both the cost of living crisis and the climate emergency we face.

"If elected I would be another Green voice at the heart of Westminster to back up the fantastic work already being done by Caroline Lucas MP.”

Her other focuses include eliminating poverty, re-joining the European Union, funding schools and hospitals properly and changing the political culture by introducing a fairer more proportional voting system for all levels of government.

Miss Pingree said, “The Green Party is firmly established in Worcester and we use our position to promote fair, green initiatives for the benefit of residents.

"We now have six Green city councillors and one county councillor and we are committed to working cooperatively and responsibly with all the political groups to help run the councils in the best interests of those we represent.

"We need to extend our ethos and approach to Westminster.”

When the news was announced, one Twitter user posted his support for Miss Pingree and highlighted how Worcester has "never elected a woman as its MP", which was retweeted by the party.

Alex Mace said: "Worcester has never elected a woman as its MP. It’s time. I’ll be delighted to vote for Tor at the next General Election."

Outside of work and politics, Miss Pingree is a keen musician and can often be found playing at Worcester’s live music venues.

She formerly studied creative Industries at Kidderminster College.
