CONCERNS have been raised that delivery drivers and people looking to dodge fees are using Cathedral Square as a makeshift car park.

Michael Lloyd posted a picture of cars parked on the plaza in front of restaurants and bars on Friday night (November 11).

Mr Lloyd said the cars seemed to belong to food delivery company drivers and has asked the city council to take action.

He tweeted: "Called into town last night and Cathedral Square looked like a car park, as did Angel Place, Lowesmoor, The Cross and Foregate Street.

"The evenings are getting taken advantage of by many food delivery companies. We do need to do something about it Worcester City Council. Happy to help if needed."

Councillor Jabba Riaz said he was going to be in touch with the local safer neighbourhood policing team.

Cllr Riaz said: "A number of people and organisations highlighted the issue on social media over the weekend of delivery drivers and members of the public parking in pedestrianised zones.

"A number of councillors have already highlighted this issue in the city centre. It is not the most dramatic but it is certainly a growing area of concern.

"I will be liaising with enforcement officers and West Mercia Police to see how we can improve things."

West Mercia Police said it receives a lot of parking-related issues but added most are not matters for the police.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "We understand parking can be a hugely frustrating issue and we receive a large volume of calls each year related to parking, however in most instances, these are not matters for the police.

"Most of the time illegal parking is enforced by the local councils. However if a vehicle is parked dangerously, or in a way that would prevent emergency vehicle access, you can report it to us online."

Worcester City Council acknowledged that delivery drivers have been causing congestion in the city.

A spokesperson for Worcester City Council said: “We continue to work with other partners to address problematic parking in the city and we’re aware that food delivery drivers collecting packages in the city have been causing congestion.

"Our Civil Enforcement teams are concentrating on problem areas, which includes evening work.

"We’d remind delivery drivers that they must park appropriately and not cause an obstruction.

"Anyone who has concerns regarding parking issues should report them to parkingoffice@worcester.gov.uk."
