A FREE breakfast was held for all students at the University of Worcester to help with food bills amid the cost of living crisis.

Students were able to get a free breakfast, including cereals, pastries and a variety of hot and cold drinks this morning at The Hangar, a bar and social venue at the Student's Union.

Worcester Student's Union organised the event between 8.30am and 10.30am due to the ongoing fears of rising costs.

Al Linforth, president of Worcester Student's Union, said the breakfast was for "anyone who wants or needs it".

They said:" Today we are hosting our breakfast club where we give free breakfast to anyone who wants or needs it.

"We know the cost of living crisis has impacted students a lot and we are just trying to do a bit to help our student population.

"We are halfway through the morning and have already had 72 students come in and we are expecting over 100 by the end of the event.

"The event is entirely funded by us, our officers get a budget every year and we decided to donate £1,000 of our personal budget to feed students here at Worcester."

Lucy Evans, a primary education student, said: "I am here to support the event and raise awareness about the free breakfast today.

"I think it is really important. Because of the cost of living crisis, buying general groceries cost a lot of our student loans, even with a job.

"Something like this can really help a lot of people in tough situations."

Cat Whitehouse, PGCE primary student, said:" The free breakfast event is great. I have been following the event on Instagram for a while.

"I live off campus and I have not been shopping in about a week because I am worried about how much my bill will come to at the end.

"During the pandemic, I feel students got overlooked quite a lot and with the rising bills I feel it is happening again."

A student's union is separate from the university and is also a registered charity which represents students' interests during their time at university.
