A former delivery driver says the public are partly to blame for parking problems in Cathedral Square.

Concerns have been raised in recent weeks about the number of cars parked outside bars and restaurants in the square.

The area has been described as looking “like a car park” with the blame being laid, at least in part, at the feet of delivery drivers.

Mazedul Shakil, who delivered for Just Eat during the pandemic, said it is not only delivery drivers who park in Cathedral Square.

He said he has seen people leave their cars parked on the square for a night out rather than leave them in the designated car parks.

Mr Shakil also pointed out that there is no parking available for delivery drivers near the food quarter with customers expecting to be delivered hot meals.

“Where should the delivery drivers park if they have orders from Cathedral Square?” he said.

“Should we tell restaurants in Cathedral Square to stop doing deliveries? It is easy saying ‘park legally’ but where, though?

“Would customers do the decent thing and stop using these platforms to order their takeaway?

"I am just fed up with people picking at people trying to make a living.”

Mr Shakil said delivery drivers are being “falsely accused” of parking in Cathedral Square.

“When in fact, the public use the front of Pizza Express as parking spaces to park their vehicles,” he added.

“Local delivery drivers get treated unfairly by everyone, when they just want to make a living to provide for their family.”

'Problematic parking' in Worcester

Worcester City Council said its approach to “problematic parking in the city” has not changed.

A spokesperson said: “Our Civil Enforcement teams are concentrating on problem areas, which includes evening work.

“We’d remind delivery drivers that they must park appropriately and not cause an obstruction.

“Anyone who has concerns regarding parking issues should report them to parkingoffice@worcester.gov.uk.”

City councillor Jabba Riaz said delivery drivers and members of the public parking in pedestrianised zones was a “growing area of concern”.

“I will be liaising with enforcement officers and West Mercia Police to see how we can improve things,” he said.

West Mercia Police said it gets a lot of reports about parking-related issues but that most are not matters for the police.
