Overcrowded lecture theatres have put university students off attending classes.

A University of Worcester student has revealed that students have been left sitting on the floors, with around half of her lectures held in classrooms that are too small.

The Forensic Science and Biological Studies student, who wished not to be named, started at the University in September and said the issue has been persistent ever since.

“There about 100 people fitting into rooms designed for 70.

“Even if you get a seat you are practically sat on top of each other, with barely enough room for a notebook let alone a laptop.

“It definitely puts people off going.”

Each week the student has around 16 contact hours, all of which are based at St John’s Campus.

They explained that the issue only affects “broader” modules involving students from other courses, namely the Chemistry and Health and Disease modules.

This amounts to around half of their total contact hours.

“If you want a seat you have to arrive really early,” she added.

“I know I am not alone, many of my coursemates agree that something needs to be done.”

The student added she had spoken with both her tutors and the student’s union, both of whom had no luck resolving the issue.

Since Worcester News contacted the university it has now been confirmed that the lectures have been moved to a lecture theatre that can hold 120 students.

No further comment was provided.

Last week, university staff have set up picket lines in response to a dispute over wages, jobs, and working conditions.

Dr Dan Eastough, UCU Worcester Branch Secretary, was "elated" with the turnout for the strike action at the St John's Campus on Thursday, November 24.

He said: "I was elated to see such a strong turn-out today. In the past, we have received what felt like very threatening and borderline bullying from management when it came to proposed strike action.

"We had at least one representative from every school at the University today which was brilliant, and we intend to continue next Wednesday at Severn Campus."
