A Worcester landlord will once again be cooking Christmas dinner for homeless and lonely people in the city.

But Colin Robinson, better known as Mad Pierre, says this year’s event may be his last.

Colin, who is landlord at The Chestnut Tree Inn in Landsdowne Road, serves up a six-course meal every December 25 to those who would otherwise be on their own.

It’s a tradition that Colin started back in the mid-1990s - and he reckons he must have cooked more than 1,000 Christmas dinners now.

But he said: “This year may be my last one. My legs are playing up quite a bit now and the thought of being on my feet for 10 hours a day is not an ideal situation really.

“I’m still willing to organise it so if I can find someone to cook it, all being well we can continue doing it.”

Colin has plenty of Christmas Day stories from the thousands of people he has cooked for over the years.

“There are some great memories,” he said. “A couple of years back, a young lad came here from St Paul’s Hostel, in one of those heavy-duty wheelchairs.

“He only got about 200 yards up the road before the battery packed up, so his mate pushed him to the pub.

“I said to him ‘well done for getting here, but your mate doesn’t look too well’. He said ‘He wouldn’t, he’s only got one leg’. He had a great day.”

The Chestnut’s Christmas meals have also sparked festive romance for some guests.

“A few years ago a couple of old dears came here on their own - a man and a woman, both in their 80s,” said Colin.

“They ended up sitting together, eating their meals together and they left together.”

Colin says there are still spaces for this year’s meal. It’s completely free and you can book a place by calling 01905 2240 or 07773 066192.

“People seem to enjoy it, there’s plenty of food being cooked and the place is reasonably warm. You can just turn up on the day - we’re not going to turn anyone away.”
