RESTAURANTS and bars in Cathedral Square forced to close on one of their busiest festive nights because of a severe water leak could receive financial support from Severn Trent Water.

On Friday, December 16, businesses were forced to close due to a burst main in Sidbury which resulted in no running water.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent Water advised that any businesses which feel like they lost income should contact them.

The spokesperson said: “We are aware that some customers experienced issues with their water supply while we were making an emergency repair to a burst water main in Worcester.

“We are very sorry to hear about the closure of businesses at Cathedral Square and any business that feels they have lost income as a result of these works contacts us directly.”

The Botanist previously confirmed it had to cancel 300 bookings as a result of the closure.

Sam Pisani, Cathedral Square centre manager, said businesses lost more than just the "takings for the day" as a result of the closure.

He said: "Whilst it was an unfortunate incident to happen on the busiest day of the year, the Cathedral Square restaurants all had to close due to Severn Trent’s issues with burst pipes in the City.

"Our businesses lost not only takings for the day, but also the costs for produce, staff, and (it also caused) disappointment for thousands of local residents, all of who had made bookings for Christmas parties.

"With this in mind, we are happy that Severn Trent is looking to compensate all businesses affected by their water network issues and thank them for the speed in which they rectified the situation in December."

Severn Trent Water confirmed that the burst main was related to the same burst main in Sidbury after the water had been restored to the businesses affected.

The leak also caused properties in the Battenhall area to be without water on Friday, December 16 until engineers managed to reroute water from another area.
