DEATH threats have been sent to MPs after activists placed fake blue plaques near waterways, claims a Worcestershire MP in a sweary statement.

Members of Extinction Rebellion unveiled the blue plaques in a spoof ceremony on bridges in Worcester and Upton-upon-Severn as part of a national day of action across the UK called Dirty Water.

Harriett Baldwin MP claims the plaques and "distortion" from parties voting against the Draft Environmental Targets Regulations has led to MPs receiving death threats.

She said: "I am disappointed but not surprised that opposition parties voted against these plans in Parliament and are simplifying and distorting the full picture with social media and blue plaques like these to create a ‘****storm’ which has led to colleagues receiving death threats.”

In Upton-upon-Severn, the plaque that was unveiled read: “Harriett Baldwin MP Voted to block a law requiring water companies to dump less raw sewage in our waterways and seas, 20th Oct 2021."

Last week's vote on the Draft Environmental Targets Regulations was passed with 300 ayes to 170 noes.

MPs signed off regulations required to enact the Environment Act’s targets on biodiversity, trees, water, marine protected areas, air quality, and resource management, despite concerns that the measures were 'weak, late and unambitious'.

Harriett Baldwin said: “Three major rivers run through West Worcestershire and it is my view that they should be properly managed.

"I am confident that the Government is forcing the water companies to take appropriate steps to end a practice which has existed for so many years and to end it in a way that does not slap vast costs on my constituents’ water bills at a time when we are all facing high inflation."

Robin Walker MP, Harriett Baldwin MP and Nigel Huddleston MP all voted in favour.

Penny Hewlett, a former tutor at Birmingham University and Extinction Rebellion member, from Malvern, said “Our MP Harriett Baldwin had an opportunity to stop water companies pumping sewage directly into our rivers.

"The blue plaques shine a light on the government’s failure to protect our waterways, the natural world, and all of us."

The blue plaques also emerged in Pershore and Evesham.
