Shoppers have been taking advantage of a closing down sale at a city centre stationery shop.

A closing down sale at Paperchase has been drawing in bargain hunters since the company announced it had gone into administration last week.

The store in Worcester’s High Street has been offering 20 per cent off many items and up to 50 per cent off others.

And the deals have clearly been popular, as a number of shelves around the store have been completely emptied over the weekend.

Customer Claire Ormerod, who had popped into browse in the sale, said she would be sad to see Paperchase go.

“It’s always been a good place to get better quality cards and wrapping paper,” she said.

“It is a shame.”

Another customer said: “I don’t shop there very often. I found out they were closing down so came down to have a look.”

'A well-loved brand'

Others suggested that high street stores closing was a sign of the times and that Paperchase was “somewhat overpriced”.

It was announced last week that Paperchase had gone into administration, leaving hundreds of jobs at risk at its 106 UK stores.

Tesco has bought the Paperchase brand and intellectual property but its deal doesn’t include any of the stores.

Jan Marchant, managing director of home and clothing at Tesco, said: “Paperchase is a well-loved brand by so many, and we’re proud to bring it to Tesco stores across the UK.

“We have been building out plans to bring more brands and inspiration to the ranges we currently offer, and this will help us to take those plans further.

“We look forward to sharing more with our customers in due course.”

Paperchase has said its stores will remain open for now, but has said it would “strongly urge” customers to redeem gift cards as soon as possible because they will not be accepted after two weeks.
